The flawed death of Mark
Day 216
June 2nd, 2024
I've been thinking a lot about Mark's death in the movie. It really confuses me. In the scene where Freddy sets Mark on fire in the dream world, he suddenly wakes up in the real world and calls out for help with his eyes wide open as if he is awake. Then it cuts back to Mark looking wide-awake, but he ends up getting his face sliced and eventually dies from being burnt alive.
I just can't wrap my head around it. Mark was clearly awake and interacting with Lori and Will, so he should have been safe from Freddy's attacks. It doesn't make sense for him to die in that situation. If the movie had introduced the concept of micro naps, it might have explained his death better, but that wasn't the case.
I get that his death was necessary for the plot and to create tension, but the way it happened just doesn't add up. If he had been asleep the whole time, it would have made sense, but he was clearly awake and asking for help. It feels like the movie didn't follow its own rules for Freddy's powers, and that's really frustrating to me. It seems like another example of poor writing and a lack of understanding of Freddy's mythology.
