Box office

 Day 237

June 23, 2024

After watching thousands of movies and spending the better part of over twenty years in the movie theater business, I feel confident that Freddy vs. Jason was a film designed to have opening weekend success, and that's all.

There is a reason it needed that one-weekend pop: word of mouth tanks or makes films. This is a bad movie, and not bad for the good reasons. While there is charm in the film, it was designed to pop and then die off. Looking over the box office stats of the film, there was a 63.2% drop from week one to week two and a 46.9% drop from week two to week 3.

If you watch the movie critically, you will realize the drop.

Word of mouth hurt the film more than likely. Not to mention that the hardcore fans came out on opening weekend and maybe didn't bother to return.

I returned eight times when it was in theaters. Then again, it was free, but the only chance we had was to see Freddy and Jason together in a film. If we knew now what we did not know then, that this would be Robert Englund’s final time playing Freddy on the big screen, it could have increased the box office based on that for the fans who have enjoyed his performance as Freddy. Maybe there wouldn't be a drastic drop between weeks because fans wanted to support Robert.
